Caveat: All following talk-through will be done with exact Martial Arts terminology, assuming you have attained the expertise to do this advanced kata. If you are not familiar with the terms review the web site.
Yoi: Come to ready stance, heiko dachi.
Mokuso: Bring right foot to left, close your eyes and bring your hands together (do not raise your hands upward from current level) left hand in front, right hand behind at belt level. The webbing between the index finger and thumb of each hand should be touching, palms inward and fingers pointing down and out.
Note: At this point you know as a Black Belt many katas can be called out and performed by you while in Mokuso attention, if you're holding weapons you know this could vary too.
Sensei very strongly calls out "Kanku Kata", now open your eyes and wait for next command which should follow almost immediately.
Yoi: Opening ;feet placement perfect, strong Ibuki breathing coming back to a very very dynamic position of heiko dachi.
Note: Master Masutatsu Oyama (Soshu was his best student) will be quoted to add the necessary
ingredients to formulate your understanding of this 80-100 move kata, depends on who's counting. Coming to yoi then getting into
Mokuso and coming back to ready (heiko dachi/Musubi dachi/heiko dachi) involves the following advanced thought.
Tensing your abdomen, stand in silent meditation to unify body and spirit. Strength must course through your entire body.
Assuming pigeon-toe stance, execute an Ibuki breath, and move into a stable stance. You must be facing forward with eyes
wide open in a bold, unintimidated manner.
Ichi: Bringing right hand over left raising your arms quietly above your head, form a circle with thumbs and index fingers of both hands to suggest entrusting yourself to the force of the universe: the sign is symbolic of the sun, the source of all power. Hold position and count to 5 silently. Break from position lower your arms to your solar plexus, (hands open) striking your right knife hand to your left palm heel.
Ni: Without moving your feet from their present locations, pivot on your right toes ninety degrees counterclockwise. Assuming Kokutsu dachi (use to be cat stance) thrust out shuto uke block, blocking attacking opponents right Seiken jodan tsuki. We use to do mawashi uke block which would push the opponents arm down, we no longer do it officially, but I like the old block myself.
San: Without altering the position of your feet, pivot on your left toes 180 degrees clockwise, and assume Kokutsu dachi, in other words reverse the directions, but follow move as explained in move Ni.
Shi: Leaving your feet in the same positions, turn ninety degrees counterclockwise facing on coming opponent and assume a left Sanchin stance, execute a basic left fore fist middle inside block. (This is an old Kyokushinkai block, become familiar with it). You are once again turning and blocking a right hand Seiken jodan tsuki attack. Without altering your position, execute immediately a right fore fist middle thrust, immediately follow with a right fore fist middle inside block and a left fore fist middle thrust to opponent. In other words, when your opponent thrusts, force his arm outside, and simultaneously thrust to his abdomen. These four techniques are done with speed.
Go: Slide forward with left foot into Kokutsu dachi shuto uke, executing a straight knife hand block.
Rokku: Slide forward with right foot into Kokutsu dachi shuto uke, executing a straight knife hand block.
Shi: Slide forward with left foot into Kokutsu dachi shuto uke, executing a straight knife hand block.
Note: This last three series of moves involves left/right/left Kokutsu dacha's and three straight knife hand blocks.
Hachi: Sliding right foot forward blocking incoming kick to middle area with shuto gedan barai (using palm) form a right spear hand (nukite), reinforce the spear hand thrust by putting your left hand under your right arm. This move permits you to block a thrusting arm or kick leg from above and then follow with a spear-hand strike, powerful kia.
Ku: Without changing the location of your feet, as you bring your right knife hand to a position behind your right ear, prepare to execute a knife-hand upper block. Then turn your body 180 degrees counterclockwise, and assume the left forward leaning stance. Now execute a basic right knife-hand strike to face temple. You can thus block your opponent's upper thrust with your left hand as you strike is face with your right shuto.
Ju: In same position (left Zen stance) execute a right front kick, into a right Zen stance and execute a left fore fist middle thrust and immediately follow-up with a right fore fist middle thrust.
Ichi Ju Ichi: As you retract your right foot in a wide rearward movement, turn your body 180 degrees clockwise. Facing front, slide forward on your right foot to put yourself in a right forward leaning stance. Bringing your right hand to your forehead, execute a left knife-hand strike to the face.
Ichi Ju Ni: Execute a left front kick, by leaving your left foot advanced after the kick, assume the forward leaning stance, and execute a right fore fist middle thrust, followed immediately by a right fore fist middle thrust.
Ichi Ju San. As you return your left foot to your right one, assume the open-toe stance by joining your heels.
Shi: retracting your left fists to your left side, placing right fist on top of left fist. This move enables you to grip the floor with which your opponent tries a kick.Ichi Ju Go: From the above position, execute a right front kick, do not lower your right foot to the floor. Instead, bring it to
the inside of your left knee, then execute a right side kick. Accompany the kick with a right thrust fist strike to face,
after bringing your right foot once again to the inside of your left knee, swing it wide to your right side, and turn your body
clockwise ninety degrees to assume the forward leaning stance. At the same time, execute an upper elbow strike to opponent's face.
Reinforce the move by striking your left elbow into the palm of your of your outstretched right hand.
Ichi Ju Rokku: Leaving your right foot in place, turn your body forward, and bring your left foot to your right one. Joining both heels, assume the open-toe stance; and retracting your fists to your right side, put your left fist on top of it.
Ichi Ju Shi: From this position, execute a left front kick, without returning your left foot to the floor, put it on the inside of your right knee. Immediately execute a left side kick, thrust your left fist to the side at the same time, after returning your left foot to your right knee momentarily, swing it wide to the left side and down. Turning your body ninety-degrees clockwise, assume a forward leaning stance, execute a right elbow strike to face, at the same time, strike your right elbow into the palm of your outstretched left hand, in other words, this is a reversal of the moves in Go/Rokku.
Ichi Ju Hachi: Leave you left foot as it is, slide your right foot into a right Sanchin dachi stance diagonally, follow with a basic fore fist upper block, (blocking a fist to your face), from the same position, retract your right arm fist to your side and execute an inverted-fist strike to opponents face, once again in the same position, retracting your right elbow as far as possible (re chambering as you did for the uraken) and making use of the reflex action thus created, sharply execute a right jodan elbow strike. Re chambering your right elbow prepare to do a descending elbow dropping low in a crouch, powerful kia.
Ichi Ju Ku: As you rise from the crouch, pivoting on your left toes, turn your body 180 degrees clockwise; and slide your left foot forward into Sanchin dachi, repeat move Hachi above.
Note: You need to perform the above four moves with speed and crispness.
Ni Ju: After rising from the crouch, pivot clockwise on your toes till you face front. (as we say going back down the line). Cross your palms to your face (Cover protecting your face) executing morote block, raising right leg, slide forward into Moro ashi dachi, and turning the palms down, lower your hands in a descending palm-heel block. You can use these movements to control an opponent's arm when he thrusts a Chudan morote Seiken from the front.
Ni Ju Ichi: Repeat step Ju
Ni Ju Ni: Repeat step Ju
Note: The above moves are a total of three done in succession. Ni Ju San: Slide forward on your right foot, assume a Han-Zen stance and execute a right middle fore fist thrust, at the same time, put your right hand on top of your right arm as reinforcement, powerful kia. Ni Ju Shi: Turning counterclockwise raising left leg perform move Ju going back down the line, left foot coming down. Ni Ju Go: Repeat move Shi Ni Ju Rokku: Repeat move go Ni Ju Shi: Repeat move San with left foot, powerful kia. Ni Ju Hachi: Now slide right foot into kiba dachi and execute jun tsuki, stay low. Ni Ju Ku: Slide right foot back to left foot Musubi dachi, right fist on top of left fist on left side. Execute right front kick, side kick, with fist thrust, coming down into right Zen stance executing right elbow strike. Repeating move go once again. San Ju Ichi: Bring left foot to right foot and repeat move Ku. Note: You will execute the above kicks on both ends of this kata, so you will doing eight kicks in all. San Ju Ichi: While in left Zen stance slide left foot back to right foot, keep knees bent, re chamber both fist to your left side of body, sliding (crossing) your left foot behind your right foot, execute a Seiken Chudan morote while going deep into Kake ashi dachi. San Ju Ni: Slide left foot out into a left kiba dachi, executing a knife hand strike with left hand on top of right hand pulling right hand back to hikite, this is move is done slowly. San Ju San: Pivoting counterclockwise ninety degrees, kick your left palm----------outstretched to the left since previous step Ni above, with your right arch. This move enables you to kick your opponent's abdomen as you turn your body. Continuing on, bring your right foot to ground in a position with your left foot, and a you turn your body counterclockwise and assume a kiba stance, stretch your left knife hand forward. In other words, you assume a position 180 degrees counterclockwise from the one in move Ni. Swing your right elbow inward, and strike your left palm with it. Continuing on, get up on your toes, slide left foot behind right foot sliding through Kake ashi dachi and execute a Seiken Chudan morote tsuki while maintaining Kake ashi dachi. San Ju Shi: Pivoting on your right foot, turn your body ninety degrees clockwise till you face forward. Swinging both arms rearward from a low position, and using the reflex to this action plus the spring in your legs, jump as high as you can. When you land, outstretched your left leg as if you were crawling. Dropping fast in this fashion helps dodge your opponent's roundhouse kick or kantana. San Ju Go: Without changing position of your feet, turn your body ninety degrees clockwise so that you face left. Swinging both knife hands above your head and to the right, sharply lower them diagonally to the left. In these moves you turn away from opponent's front kick directed from your left side and block it with both knife hands. San Ju Rokku: Rise up into Kokutsu Dachi facing forward and execute a knife hand block. San Ju Shi: Without altering the position of your feet, turn your body ninety degrees counterclockwise so that you face left, and assume heiko dachi stance, execute a right lower parry followed by a left middle inside block. San Ju Hachi: Follow with a right middle inside block and a left lower parry. San Ju Ku: Once again bring left hand over right hand, as in first move of this kata, raise them above your head, this is a second symbolic gesture to promote spiritual and physical unity. Count to five slowly, after lowering your hands to your solar plexus, strike left knife hand to your right knife hand. Shi Ju: Next, pivoting on your left foot, turn clockwise 180 degrees, and after bringing your right foot to a position parallel with that of your left foot, step right to assume a kiba dachi stance. Re chamber (hikite) your right hand to your right side, and outstretch your left arm. Turning your extended left knife hand parallel with the ground, swing it well to the right side. When it is full right, execute a right spear hand, accompanied by a simultaneous retracting of the left hand. Turning the palm parallel with the floor, leave your right outstretch, and swing it counterclockwise to the left. When it is full left, execute a left spear hand. While left spear hand is outstretched in kiba dachi, with left hand execute a left hand tensho cover block with Ibuki breathing. Immediately follow-up with a right/left spear hand strike. Note: this above movement will be done four times total. Shi Ju Ichi: Retaining the same position, pivot on your right foot, and slide your left foot and your whole body counterclockwise 180 degrees and perform the above move on the other side of your body. Shi Ju Ni: Without changing your position, pivot clockwise 90 degrees on your left foot till your body faces forward and is parallel to the floor, and repeat movement Ju once again. Shi Ju San: Without changing position, cross your right foot in front of your left foot, then slides your left foot parallel with your right one, and slide to the right into kiba dachi. Shi Ju Shi: While in deep kiba dachi stance, swinging both hands to a position behind your right ear, sharply snap them downward to the inside of your left knee. Execute a lower parry, follow immediately with a fore fist descending thrust. Note: The above move Shi, is a Judo technique (seoinage) against an opponent attacking from the rear. After throwing him use a fore fist strike to his face. Shi Ju Go: Now while holding last position, swing both hands to a position behind your left ear, then snap them sharply downward to the inside of the right knee, follow with right lower parry, execute a left fore fist descending thrust, powerful kia. Yamae: Come back to heiko dachi, maintain Zanshin. Na o rae: Relax but maintain formYasume: You no longer need to maintain form, but you must adhere to Dojo Protocols.
