Nunchaku Kata (Kihon Sono Ichi)
1.) Before starting Kata visually check the tether, if frayed, do not use Nunchaku.
2.) Stand in Heiko Dachi (ready position) nunchucks in right hand, hold nunchucks approximately 1 1/2
hand widths from tether.
3.) At the command "Yoi" bring nunchucks to ready. Bring nunchucks in right hand to center chudan position,
open fingers of right hand but still holding nunchucks, bring left hand up to
take one nunchuck in left hand. Cross nunchucks in front with tether
approximately chin high. Uncross hands with great force to physically test the tether.
Finish holding hands at chudan level with nunchucks (one nunchaku in each hand)
Ichi: Migi ashi mae into Sei Gan Kamae (kia powerfully).
Ni: With right hand Gyaku Kesa (diagonal downward strike)
to left side with right hand, bring up the left hand to right side of face to guard against being
struck on that side of the head by nunchuck. Follow with Kesa with
three Ura Buri. At the top of the third rotation, swing
the free nunchaku over your right sholder and stop the nunchuck against your back.
Now do another Gyaku Kesa and at the same time drop your left hand to
gedan position on your left side. When the nunchuck reaches the bottom of the
Gyaku Kesa use your right wrist to flip the
nunchuck into you waiting left hand (Kaiashi).
San: Hidari ashi mae into Sei Gan Kamae (Kia powerfully)!
Shi: With the left hand flip the right nunchaku into the face (Naga Buri)
of the imaginary opponent, use the wrist. Maintain the position of the right hand, in other words
don't move the right hand. Catch the returning nunchuck in the right hand
(Shomen). Repeat Naga Buri
and catch returning nunchuck in right hand. Next with the left wrist do Hachi Buri
three (3) times. Finish with Gyaku Kesa catching and stopping
the free nunchuck at the right hip (Osame).
Go: Hidari ashi steps back into Jodan Kamae (Kia powerfully).
Rokku: Release nunchaku in left hand and Swing down (Tate Buri)
with right hand, swing up (Tate Buri), now rotate the nunchaku
three full rotations (Ura Buri) at the top of the third rotation
stop the nunchaku by swinging the free nunchaku over the right shoulder. Do Gyaku Kesa and finish with
Kaiashi.
Shichi: Migi ashi crosses behind hidari ashi, Turn body 180 degrees hold nunchucks in
Gedan Kamae and body should be in low Kiba Dachi (Kia powerfully).
Hachi: Kesa with right hand, use your whole body to do this technique.
Swing the free nunchaku over right shoulder to stop nunchuck against your back. Gyaku Kesa
to left side and Kaiashi.
Ku: Hidari ashi mae into Sei Gan Kamae, Kia powerfully.
Ju: With the left hand flip the right nunchaku into the face (Naga Buri)
of the imaginary opponent twice, use the wrist. Maintain the position of the right hand, in other words don't
move the right hand. Catch the returning nunchuck in the right hand (Shomen).
Repeat Naga Buri and catch in right hand. Next with the left wrist do
Hachi Buri three (3) times, move the right hand up to the right side of
the head to protect the head. Finish with Gyaku Kesa catching and
stopping the free nunchuck at the right hip (Osame).
Ichi Ju: Turn to the left hidari ashi mae into Sei Gan Kamae.
With left hand Gyaku Kesa, followed by Kesa,
continue with three full counter clockwise rotations (Ura Buri) of the nunchaku.
Stop the nunchaku at the top of the third rotation by swinging the nunchaku over the left shoulder. Next do
three full clockwise rotations (Ura Buri) on the left side. At the top of the third
rotation Gyaku Kesa to the right side and Kaiashi.
Ni ju: Feet do not move, Raise nunchaku to Jodan Kamae, strong Kia.
San Ju: Migi ashi mae, Gyaku Kesa, now as the right foot
moves back do Kesa continue and do two full clockwise rotations
(Ura Buri) of the nunchaku. Stop the nunchaku over the right shoulder.
Now do Gyaku Kesa then Kaiashi.
Yan ju: Feet do not move, Raise nunchaku to Jodan Kamae, strong Kia.
Go Ju: Hidari ashi mae, Gyaku Kesa, now as the left foot
moves back do kesa continue and do two full counter clockwise
rotations (Ura Buri) of the nunchaku. Stop the nunchaku over
the left shoulder. Now do Gyaku Kesa then Kaiashi.
Rokku Ju: Mawate (migi ashi crosses behind), into Juji Kamae. With right
hand do three Hachi Buri. Finish with Gyaku Kesa
and catch at left side (osame).
Nana ju: Feet do not move, raise nunchaku to Jodan Kamae, strong Kia.
Hachi Ju: Hidari ashi mae, Strike down with left hand (Gyaku Kesa)
and catch Kaiashi
Ku Ju: Turn body to the right and migi ashi mae into Sei Gan Kamae.
Ju Ju: At the command Yame bring the left foot forward to Yoi Dachi (Ready Stance).
